What counts as ID

USPS needs two documents: one photo ID, and one that proves your current address. They have to be two different documents — a driver's license can be either one, but not both.

Photo ID — pick one

  • U.S. State/Territory/Tribal Driver's or Nondriver's ID Card
  • Passport (U.S. or foreign)
  • U.S. Permanent Resident Card
  • Certificate of Naturalization
  • Uniformed Service ID
  • U.S. Access Card
  • U.S. University ID Card
  • Matricula Consular
  • NEXUS Card

Address ID — pick one

  • U.S. State/Territory/Tribal Driver's or Nondriver's ID Card
  • Current lease
  • Mortgage statement or Deed of Trust
  • Home or vehicle insurance policy
  • Vehicle registration card
  • Voter registration card

Not accepted

  • Utility bills — electric, water, gas, internet, cable or phone
  • Bank or credit card statements
  • Photocopies, scans, or phone-wallet versions — bring the physical document
  • Anything expired

The easiest pair: your driver's license, plus your vehicle registration or insurance card.

Both documents have to be current, and the address has to match what you put on the form. Form 1583 is signed at our counter with us as witness.
